Pa’s Overtime Pay

I recently updated this fictional poem I wrote for a pioneer project, inspired by the original song (and true event) which follows.

I waded through deep drifts of snow

As fast as my sore feet could go.

The stock were watered, milked and fed.

I longed to reach my own warm bed.

Just at the door, I turned to stare.

What was that faint but growing glare?

Ah, northern lights! But not just north—

East, west and south, all flashing forth

in bursts of joy and glory, too!

I watched, not knowing what to do.

The vast display seemed meant for me,

But I ran for my family.

Not one would wake, they were so deep

In dreams that strengthened winter’s sleep,

And so I stood outside alone.

The colored flames approached the throne

to praise the universe’s King.

And then I saw the heavens sing.

The Heavens Declaring written by me, arranged and sung by Elanna Lund
